WASHINGTON — U. S. health officials are calling on companies like Pfizer and Amazon to pay for men who are afraid they are being bullied by regulators over sexual performance.
In a statement Wednesday afternoon, the Food and Drug Administration said it has not determined whether Pfizer and Amazon violated the company’s privacy rules.
The two companies — which sold Viagra, which was withdrawn in 1998 because of sexual complaints by a woman and her boyfriend, and Prilosec, a drug used to treat diabetes — have been accused of engaging in a string of other breaches of federal privacy laws.
The companies also said they would reimburse patients if they made a complaint with the FDA. The FDA has not ruled out any criminal charges against the companies, although the FDA is investigating the matter.
Pfizer and Amazon, both of which sell erectile dysfunction drugs, have said their products are not approved for use in the U. but have had to pay for it.
“We understand that the FDA’s approval process is a delicate one, and that a company that markets prescription drugs can and should pay a lot of money for it,” said Jeffery M. Koons, a spokesman for Amazon, which makes the products. “We’re committed to protecting our privacy and consumers’ health.”
The FDA rejected a similar request by Pfizer in 2015 over claims that it made misleading and embarrassing representations to the public about the effects of its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra.
The FDA has not yet made any decisions about whether to approve Viagra or the other erectile dysfunction drugs the company sells.
The FDA has not issued any comment on whether Pfizer or Amazon will pay for the companies’ products, or whether they will reimburse patients, according to the company.
